PC Gaming Baldurs Gate 3

It was announced at E3 last year but they've been working on the game for a few years. 350 people working on the project. Be interesting to see how this develops. Been ages since I played the old one, and the remade games are still gathering e-dust in my digital library. Maybe I'll try and play them before this game gets its proper release.

All the motion capture makes me think that this won't be the same perspective as the original games.

Terthna

Professional Lurker
Thankfully Beamdog isn't involved with the project, as far as I can tell; so this game might actually have a chance of being good.

More details released, particularly in regards to character generation and customization, for Baldurs Gate III.

Information is coming in from the Early Access release, mostly on the playerbase of course because that's the world we live in apparently.

Gamers are horny and evil and willing to do the latter to satisfy the former.

Like I said in the "what are you playing" thread I'm being slowly sucked in.
Man, wrapping my fossile brain around 5ed rules is taking me ages! To me it seems that all casters have become sorcerers and bards! Took me a loooong while to grasp that.
And wizards and sorcerers seem to have switched - it are the once instinctive casters who know their spells inside and out and thus can max them out, not the studiosus dudes ...

I like a comment I've seen somewhere - 5ed - and thus BG3 - is sprinkled with odd shoutouts to 2ed and 3-3.5eds - not always coherent :)
E.g. the Paladin blurb puts them firmly in the "kick ass for goodness" camp (2ed), yet they can be of any alignment (3-3.5ed EDIT - 4th, akshualy).

But back to the game ...
Amusingly the Companions - the five characters the PC must use to fill out the party, are poster children for Evul!Bitches 'R' Us :) - the LE and NE are girls, CE - is a bi-sex male elf (and vampire), plus two human males - both probably Neutral, one (the Rastafarian) may be Good.
More Companions will be added later. Same applies to Alignment.

Eyecandy - for me, after a decade or two of CRPG gaming hiatus - the visual quality is dazzling!
I'm getting into it, will spend the long May weekend giving my male Half-drow Paladin of Llolth* a test run :p

* somewhere out there a tr00 to lore kitten died

Err, Paladins had to be Lawful Good in 3 and 3.5. The alignment restriction wasn't removed until 4th Edition (which also did away with the alignment Grid and replaced it with an alignment Line) which was then kept into 5th edition (which brought back the Grid because everyone agreed the Line was stupid).

Thanks for correcting me, Senior Moment here :)

Although I generally consider 4th to be a travesty (the least mentioned the better), I actually "bought" that change. It codified my feeling (which I either had arrived at myself, read somewhere, nicked from Warhammer, or all of the above :p) that Paladin = Warrior Priest, linked to a particullar deity - I was OK with that in Warhammer 2ed, so why not in DnD ...
the Line was stupid
Yup. A line was stupid in 1987 already when used for Warhammer RPG 1ed ... my group quite quickly dropped it and replaced with grid ... and then simply shades of grey - from "goodish" through "neutral" through "not so bad" to "evuler" and finally "the worst!" :D

I rescued a character from evul! Goblins:
[RESIGNED] "So, what it's gonna be?"
"Huh?!? What do you mean by that?" [my dump stat is INT, BTW]
[SIGH] "I'm a Deep Gnome, you a Drow. I know how things are. So, what's it gonna be? Enslavement? A wee round of torture? Blood sacrifice? Or just some good old fashioned whalloping?"

The process of becoming an Oathbreaker involves a long dialogue with a NPC whose speech has distinct ....north British patterns.
At a certain point I began to giggle, imagining:
"Your class has switched from Paladin to Oathbreaker. Untill you Repent and have regained your Vows you will sound like Groundsman Willie."

Getting level 5 hits different.

Cant wait until full release shame we didn't get to play with the monk class

YMMV and To Each Their Own - Monk is a class I've steadfastly ignored since 1990 :)
To me Gandalf and Chuck Norris or Bruce Lee do not mix ...
But as they say - there is no one true way to Warhammer (or DnD) - so, whatever rocks your boat! Have fun!

Am edging to 4th level, a milestone of sorts as various juicy upgrades are available.
A boost in two stats, several bosts in a single stat and some skill/feat, etc ...

Scroll to Lvl 4:

I've made up my mind as to three of my characters.
Miss Raging Hormones - Lay'Zeal (she is 17 y/o) and my Swole Drow Beefcake get the stat upgrades to STR - ATM she is STR 17, me 15, and - respectively - DEX (13) and CON (13) - as they are melee fighters and will benefit from the +1 in those areas.
Miss Dark, Mysterious and Dangerous to Know - Shadowheart, will get Proficiencies in two WIS skills (WIS 16 ATM) - definitely Perception as she is the party's trap finder plus another TBD (prolly Survival, as Medicine seems to have 100% success rate anyway), and Nature - an INT skill. She also will received the headband boosting INT to 17 as to make use of those INT based skills (she already has Religion. A Priestess with Proficiency in Relgion, who'd had thunk that?). Other INT skills are covered by Gale.

Now, what to do with Gale?
Wizard:

STR9INT*16
DEX14WIS11
CON15CHA13

I can add 2 points to a single stat, or spread those points around.
Is INT 18 at such a low level game worthwhile?
Increase CON and WIS by 1 for the +1 to saving throws there? CHA based skills are covered by my CHA 16 Oathbreaker Paladin, whose skillset includes Persuasion, Intimidation and Deception :D
Or maybe Light Armour Proficiency to free up a Spell Slot? One can never have too many Fireballs ...
This would eliminate the need for Gale to cast Mage Armour (that's a spell, folks, not equipment) and provide the same protection. As LAP comes with +1 STR this would increase his loot carrying capacity (partly offset by weight of armour)?
No, as much as I'd get a kick out of having Darth Vader on my team he cannot get Medium or Heavy Armour :p
Then again - +2 to INT would give me an extra Spell Slot too ...
Maybe Clerical spells? I'd get an extra Lvl1 spell slot (and 2 Cantrips)?
I dismiss combat related Feats - e.g. "gain proficiency in four Martial Weapons of your choice" :)
But maybe "Tough" for 8 HP boost?

I am a Drow (a Paladin), remember?
Kid tugs at my sleeve:
"You a drow? WOW! I heard they snatch away kiddies! Is that true?"
"LIES! We kill many more children than we abduct!"

There were other options for reply, but I could not resist the one tagged as "LOLTHSWORN DROW"

Larian Studios just revealed that it is bringing forward the PC version from 1.IX to 3.VIII.
[Palpatine voice and composure]
Good, good ...
[moment later starts running around screaming]
It's coming out early! It's coming out early!
PS5 version still comes out in early September, while the XBox version is "in the works".
