It's a lot easier to lug big rocks at a planet than risk reentry and waste precious fuel by going into a standstill above said planet.
Not actually true. Rocks aren't free, and it's actually possible the engine-torch maneuver used less delta-V than rock-dropping, and took way less time.

Allegedly those drop pods are forty stories tall. Roughly 400 feet tall carrying the combat suits and mining equipment. This was the start of the colonization of Pandora. Massive amounts of gear in a short amount of time. They didn't want to give the cat people a window to respond in.
Not just the Na'vi, but Pandora/Eywa itself. Anything not put on the "excluded" list, like the Avatar Program research staff that sided with the Na'vi in the first film (like Norm), are attacked like viruses by the planet.

The Recom Commandos are actually a cheat around this immune reaction -- they're recognized as being part of Pandora, like the Avatars were, despite the fact they're genetically engineered monstrosities (seriously, they tower over the original Avatars and Na'vi).

Which begs the question how far can RDA go with their gene splicing technology? Because well....

How dare you insult ancient strategy of Big Rok on other idiot head, it best strategy, work for people even before people evolve from smol rodents, just ask big lizard bones.

Humor aside, for a civilization thet can build a ship that can accelerate to a large fraction of c slamming rocks or other heavy objects into Pandora would be child's play.
