Austria goes to war against Russia during the Crimean War

Austria will win the Congress of Poland, Wallachia, Moldavia and Bessarabia

It would encourage Sweden to join the Crimean War (they secretly planned to join if the Austrians did) so they might get Finland back

The siege of Petropavlovsk may end with a British-French victory. Britain may take Alaska and France Sakhalin, so we may get French colonization of Japan and Korea.

Some interesting butterflies here. Going to have a very resentful Russia and I wonder whether they would move the capital back to Moscow as depending on the exact Finnish border St Petersburg could be very exposed. French success in NE Asia would make them big opponents of Russia and you could see Russia not able to take the Amuri region in 1860 assuming the '2nd Opium War' still occurs. Mind you a lot of this would be changed if Prussia emerges as the power that unifies Germany as OTL that changes everything.

I could possibly see Britain/Canada getting Alaska but not sure about France getting Sakhalin given how isolated it is from their other bases. Plus I do remember reading that at least the British forces in the area were uncertain whether Sakhalin was an island or part of the mainland. Think France might look for influence elsewhere which they might see as more valuable.

Technically Britain gaining Alaska could be seen as a breach of the US Monroe Doctrine but the US didn't really have the resources to challenge the UK at this point.

Basically the UK imposed the Monroe Doctrine on America because it suits them

Explore Sakhalin may interest France

I don't think so (throughout the eighteenth century the capital remained in St. Petersburg, despite the proximity of the Swedes

??? Britain offered a joint declaration to prevent a French lead 'holy league' attempting to restore the Spanish empire in mainland by force. Not wanting to be connected to Britain but knowing that the RN would do the hard work for them anyway Monroe made his famous declaration.

It may interest some idiots but its a frozen wastelands half a world away and very closed to - if not a physical part of - imperial Russia so would be a pig to try and defend.

True but that was a victorious Russia and a defeated and crushed Sweden that lost most of its empire - keeping only a heavily ravaged Finland and past of Pomerania. Here admittedly its a coalition that may well not last but technology makes then a lot more threatening. However you could be right as the Russian leadership could decide that St Petersburg was politically and economically too important and keep the capital there.
