Honestly, I think lots of people aren't aware of just how powerful the setting is

I wouldn't exactly call it a powerful setting..The strongest character in the setting tops out just below Odin from Marvel at his absolute nastiest. The second two strongest characters are solar system wreckers at their highest upper limit and even that requires a generous helping of "taking prophecy at face value". Granted Tolkien's explanation as to why is pretty solid. The rest of the big dogs are casual continent wreckers who at their greatest extent helped shape a relatively small universe by creating the laws of physics and shit in a gigantic heavy metal concert that spanned an "age of the world" and everyone else just goes down from there.

That's nice but its hardly impressive...compared to some of the other stuff we analyze. I think what happens is, they're the biggest rat terrier in a junkyard populated by Chihuahuas basically? They're the big guys in the low tier bracket for fictional settings..and can give good odds against mid tier settings but that's about it.

And people tend to have trouble with understanding that.

It doesn't help that as I said, its hard to find debatable matches for a fiction like that.

It reminds me of the old Charmed vs Harry Potter fights from the mid to late 00's when people would get monstrously asshurt that a bunch of soccer moms could smoke the Potterverse like a cheap blunt at a PTSA meet up.

Me, thinking both settings were equally mediocre never really had the personal investment so the matches were always amusing for the reaction they caused.

Maybe not helped if you only ever watched the movies

Hilariously even there...Galadriel creating shockwaves that cover a country, Gandalf darkening Rivendel and causing a fucking earth quake..etc etc.

Also, what about all the implied alien races that may exist here? There are Deep Ones and I think the oily blackstone maybe of interest

The featless things who don't appear?

I've no opinion at all because they don't do a damn thing..So I can't analyze them zaru.png

How in the world is ASOFAI a "strong* setting? Don't get me wrong it's certainly an interesting setting but"Strong"? Hardly 99.95% of fantasy world's spank planetos every time and twice on Sunday. Seriously Carl what in the world said strong to you?

I was referring to Legendarium admittedly

Yeah but even there...It's mostly a Maester analyzing and speculating on the speculation of other Maester's.

Something something Valyrians and their thousand Dragon airforce all naturally the size of the black dread!

Nevermind that Valyrian Dragons in canon couldn't handle Giant Gorillas and some bigass turtles but whatever

I really don't get how they weren't able to conquer the entire world.

Also, TBF, I don't think conquering Sothoryos and establishing settlements would have been easy

Bet u could take 3 random non-chanbelers from WOT and they roll the whole setting. Magic or no nothing in westros is "impressive" strong my ass. That's frankly hilarious Mat Cauthoun would make little finger and Varys cry like little girls.

Because there's a literal empire of 17 foot tall Gorillas flying Pterodactyls that are crazier and more aggressive than Dragons in Sothoryos? and a literal horde of giant snow Baboons who ride T Rex sized Iguanas as battle mounts at the edge of Yi Ti?

And Yi Ti itself is an incredibly ancient cesspit of crazy wizards and beast men and they suffered pretty hard the last time they fought a bunch of swamp running wizards?

The glorious kingdom of Kong, ninth of his name...beater of the plagues and nameless horrors that devour the naked, pale apes from across the sea would agree with you.

Wheel of time...Sword of Truth...Hell Zed spent his middle aged years soloing armies.

I'm pretty sure even the Malazan factions could do it.

Wheel of Time is like sending Mike Tyson to break up a fight between toddlers.

Emperor Beld from Lodoss invading Westeros?

They'd last..as long as Beld feels like letting them last?

Assuming Karla doesn't show up to start trolling both settings in which case the Others kill themselves rather than Face Karla and her Social Darwinism empowered sorcery.

So Aeil, then more Aiel and then finally Sheinsrans and Aiel. BOOM conquered Planetos and that's before we bung in channelers. GOT is straight-up weak sauce for fantasy but still entertaining.

Honestly Its entertaining for the characters more than anything..If you want intrigue in a fantasy/semi historical setting. Bernard Cornwell does it better in the Warlord Chronicles and those were basically his attempt at a "shitpost".

Or Follet's Pillars of the Earth....Or Clavell's Shogun...though I suppose neither is very fair given both men wrote espionage stories professionally before they delved into the swords and knights Genre.

I enjoy Martin's cavalcade of neurotic maniacs more than anything..The stories are immensely enjoyable because of how incredibly fucked up and dysfunctional and arrogant the characters are. But Martin himself read The Lord of the Rings and walked away feeling a sense of absence and dissatisfaction because the dude ought to have been reading Dune for what he wanted. 300767289228263424.png

How would the Shannara chronicles do?

I've never read the books..but I'm told they can get pretty nasty featwise?

The guy could very likely just take over their legions of zombies any way.

Sauron is probably the best low to mid level telepath in fiction and his mindfuckery has only canonically lost to two people.

Galadriel who is a god damn monster.

And friggen Gandalf and in Gandalf's case it was more, Sauron tried to boil Frodo's brain and Gandalf sensed it and stepped in between the two and Sauron was kinda caught off guard and dueled with him a bit before he pissed off to focus his vast mental powers on his armies.

Even Luthien wasn't trying to step up to him in a slam dance of the minds and that girl flattened every building on the island she took from him with a thought.

Or maybe even take over average Others.
Something like:
Sauron : Nightking is tyrant! i would gave you freedom, victory, babies and pay twice as much as him !
Nightking: i am your ruler ! crush that...wait where are you going?
Others : hurray for Sauron!!!
Nightking : wait,he could not pay you twice us me ! i never pay you anything !
Sauron: yes, that is why i pay twice as much.

Happy end.President Sauron after free other election ruled over them for eternity.
