Dylan Hernandez of the Los Angeles Times said Biles failed as a gymnast:
Column: Simone Biles excels as a human being but fails as a gymnast

I was kinda happy that this seemed to be the one place discussing the Olympics without bringing up Simone Biles yet. I'll be honest, I was OVER the constant discussions about Simone Biles walking out a few days ago in team competition but literally everyone on social media and the television was talking about her constantly. What was worse is that Simone Biles stated part of the reason was the pressure of being placed as the 'superstar' of the US Olympic Team or whatever... and so everyone KEPT talking about Simone Biles even more. Let give it a break everyone, there's other people in the Olympics FFS. :p

Thankfully the spotlight seems to finally being moving off of her thanks to the strong performances by the rest of the team.

Simone Biles' choice doesn't make her heroic or cowardly. She's a human being who apparently made the right choice if her head wasn't in the game and she couldn't perform her best.

Agreed. She deserves no special praise or condemnation for what she did. If she felt she couldn't do it, it's for her to decide.

The only further observation I make is she may have to face the same decision again, because excessive mental pressure is part and parcel of being an Olympic-level athlete.

True but she's already twenty four years old so this was likely her last Olympics regardless. Regardless her legacy as a Gymnast was pretty secure as is... though if she killed it in these games, she would've had an even more dominant legacy in Gymnastics on top of being the best gymnast likely in modern times.

Let's not forget about Biles could still compete in the other individual events next week.

The first new World Record was made in these Olympic Games by South Africa's Tatjana Schoenmaker of South Africa in the 200 meter Women's breaststroke with a time of 2:18.95 which beat the previous record of Riike Moller Pederson of Denmark at 2:19.11 in 2013.

In the same event, American swimmers Lilly King and Annie Lazor won silver and bronze. All three of them as well as 5th place South African swimmer Kaylene Corbett were all embracing and hugging and crying and congratulating each other in the pool in the immediate aftermath of the event. It was sweet. ❤

Any thoughts on Suni Lee becoming the first Hmong American & first Asian American gymnast to win the Individual All-Around in Women's Gymnastics ?

I'm watching the routines right now. I mean I already know the results but still... Good stuff so far. We'll see if we got anotehr legend in the making.

It was a major bummer seeing the Brazilian Rebecca Andrade misstep on the floor exercise though. Nice to know she got the first medal for her country in that competition however. She's clearly one of the best regardless as well.

I'm expecting Lee to continue her gymnastics career at Auburn University (she's going to college after Tokyo).

Jade Carey (Oregon State), Jordan Chiles (UCLA) & Grace McCallum (Utah) also likely continuing their gymnastics careers in college as well.

Don't be surprised if College Women's Gymnastics gets super exciting with NIL already in effect.

That the media places to much notice on race?

Besides that it is nice to see that the Gymnastics program is good enough to out last a superstar. That can be a major problem with some of the smaller sports. They get a super athlete and once they retire the sport is dead. But it looks like the US has managed to build up enough that both swimming and gymnastics have strong feeder programs.

In Gymnastics, Rebeca Andrade won gold on the vault competition. With this, she's the first Brazilian female athlete to win two medals in a single edition of the Olympics, and tomorrow she may become the second Brazilian athlete to win three medals in a single edition of the Olympic Games(first one was Isaquias Queiroz, on canoeing, at the Rio Olympics; he won two silver medals and one bronze) - she'll be on the floor competition.

How did McKayla Skinner & Jade Carey do in Vault ?

I had a feeling Andrade was going to win Gold in Vault.

Holy crap... a Belarussian Track and Field athlete, Krystsina Tsimanouskaya, apparently wanted to claim asylum after criticizing her Olympic National Team coaches for mismanagement and that in turn sprung up a 'national smear campaign' against her in her home country. Her coaching staff is allegedly 'forcing' her to go to the airport for a flight back to Belarus. But she's currently speaking with Japanese police at said Airport about her options.
