Might as well start this thread sooner or later.

The 2020 Summer Olympics was delayed for one year thanks to the Chinese WuFlu but it'll be happening now starting on July 23rd and ending on August 8th. I've been watching the Olympic US Trials for a bit and they were fun. There's going to be scads of new events as well including:

Wrestling (should've never been cancelled in the first place)
Baseball/Softball (should've never been cancelled in the first place)
Squash
3x3 Basketball (I didn't realize this was a thing)
Freestyle BMX
Madison Cycling (going to have to google this one)

Also under new IOC ruling, sports of a local interest are allowed on the program. They will apparently include:

Karate
Sport Climbing
Surfing
Skateboarding

As is, the above sports have been approved only for this years Summer Olympics. Also there will be an exhibition SUMO tournament!

205 Countries will be in the Parade of nations including Russia though as stated on Wikipedia: On 9 December 2019, the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) banned Russia from all international sport for a period of four years, after the Russian government was found to have tampered with lab data that it provided to WADA in January 2019 as a condition of the Russian Anti-Doping Agency being reinstated. As a result of the ban, WADA plans to allow individually cleared Russian athletes to take part in the 2020 Summer Olympics under a neutral banner, as instigated at the 2018 Winter Olympics, but they will not be permitted to compete in team sports. The title of the neutral banner has yet to be determined; WADA Compliance Review Committee head Jonathan Taylor stated that the IOC would not be able to use "Olympic Athletes from Russia" (OAR) as it did in 2018, emphasizing that neutral athletes cannot be portrayed as representing a specific country. Russia later filed an appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) against the WADA decision. The Court of Arbitration for Sport, on review of Russia's appeal of its case from WADA, ruled on December 17, 2020 to reduce the penalty that WADA had placed. Instead of banning Russia from sporting events, the ruling allowed Russia to participate at the Olympics and other international events, but for a period of two years, the team cannot use the Russian name, flag, or anthem and must present themselves as "Neutral Athlete" or "Neutral Team". The ruling does allow for team uniforms to display "Russia" on the uniform as well as the use of the Russian flag colors within the uniform's design, although the name should be up to equal predominance as the "Neutral Athlete/Team" designation.

Also North Korea will not be participating due to WuFlu concerns, marking the first time North Korea will not be participating since the 1988 Games in Seoul, South Korea.

Anyone else looking forward to the Games of the 32nd Olympiad?

I am.

While it is now the hip thing to bash the Olympics and say they are a waste of money overall I like them.

They showcase a bunch of smaller sports that never will have a superbowl. The Olympics are the superbowl for tons of people that spend long hours and lots of time to hone skills that deserve respect.

I am looking forward to Gymnastics, swimming, equestrian and volleyball.

I do hope that covid fears don't stop athletes and counrties from coming even if plans for extra exhibits have already been cancelled. But so far it looks like only North Korea is not coming and who really cares about them anyways. But it looks like a strong desire to return to normal is helping thi gs along.

I like to see them come just so we can see how many people they bring and how if any free time they get.

But I am looking forward mainly since Bolt isn't in the Olympics this year.
I wonder how many the US will win

Bold Prediction: US Women's Gymnastics Team will win Team Gold for the 3rd consecutive Olympics in a row.

Big question is whether Simone Biles wins the All-Around very easily ?

Scrimmage Games might not mean much when it comes to Olympic Basketball but I love the framing and writing in this article nonetheless... 😁

Australia is actually one of the better teams in the competition. And USA Basketball keeps making the same mistakes during international competition they should kill year after year since like 2008. Hilarious really.

Thanks Democrats... 😛

USA Basketball will be fine.

Ehhhh... I feel like it's a heck of a stretcher to blame Biden for a Basketball team losing twice. Losing streaks happen and have little to do with who's in the white house.

BREAKING NEWS: Coco Gauff tested positive for COVID-19 & will not be participating in the 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo, Japan. I should note that the 2020 Summer Olympics begin this upcoming Friday on July 23rd on NBC (I'll be watching the US Women's Gymnastics Team dominating Women's Gymnastics once again 😉).

So the Opening Ceremony is today and kicks off the Olympics.

The press is looking for trouble just like Rio with a lage focus on covid and some protests. But overall I expect them to run as normal and the bad press tp fade as the games go on.

Personally I normally watch them recroded and will watch them later today after work. This allows me to skip a bunch of boring stuff.

But for all Olympic fans today is the kick off of two weeks of fun and games.

Watched the Opening Ceremony of the 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo on NBC earlier this morning. It was AWESOME & dignified.

I liked the Opening Ceremony (or the "Creative" portion as they call it), it seemed pretty neat. I dunno if I'd rank it one way or another but it seemed fine.

The March of Nations or what have you was rather boring to be honest unfortunately. Smaller groups of athletes. No fans. There was a lot of dancing and cheering and waving but without the audience, it took a lot of the spectacle away. Plus the commentary provided by NBC was pretty boring... and the only reaction shots you could get were from Jill Biden, who they showed like a billion times through the broadcast.

But I plan on having the Olympics fixed on my television for the next two weeks. Right now it's 3v3 Womens Halfcourt Basketball, USA vs. France. Sport I'm intimately familiar with but never saw on the television. :p

I liked the opening ceremony. The cretive portion was good and I do agree that parade of nations without a crowd was a bit of a downer. The announcers where a normal bust but I have never really liked the commentary and find it dumb every Olympics.

Just finshed watching the frist round of rowing and it looks likes Great Britian has some competition this year. Also it looks like American women's soccer is finally losing and its domination is coming to an end.

I'm waiting for Women's Gymnastics where I am anticipating the US Women's Gymnastics Team to win the Team Gold for the 3rd consecutive Olympics in a row.

True I think they could use some humbling.

I also saw the disappointing showing USA put up against Sweden in 2v2 beach volleyball.

Hopefully swimming and gymnastics allow the US to shine becasu3 we are off to a rough start.

Are you foreshadowing the US Women's Gymnastics Team is due to get humbled ? 🤔

Please explain in full detail why.

Some cool stuff yesterday.

I saw the 400 meter Individual Medley. The United States won gold (Chase Kalisz) and silver (Jay Litherland) in that event which is notable because Michael Phelps apparently still has the World and Olympic Records for that event dating back to 2008. Australia's Brendon Smith was a tenth second behind and got Bronze.

Mens 400 meter Individual Medley

What was way cooler to watch though, even though the USA only got Bronze was the 400 meter Freestyle. Apparently the three time Olympic Medal Winner, a Chinese swimmer named Sun Yan, was banned from the Olympics for tampering with anti-doping investigations which meant for this event the field was wide open. No one seemed to suspect that Tunisia's 18 year old Ahmed Hafnaoui would actually win Gold however. He only got 8th place in the 2018 Youth Olympics and barely qualified for this event but managed to win with the Silver going to Australian Jack McLoughlin and the Bronze going to the USA's Kieran Smith. The favorite of this event, Germany's Henning Muhlleitner finished 4th. Less then a second separated all four of them however.

Mens 400 meter Freestyle

Also William Shaner (easy typo there) in his Olympic debut in the 10 meter air rifle won both the Gold Medal and made an Olympic Record score that was just 1.2 points shy of the World Record.

Lee Kiefer, a medical student out of Notre Dame, won the first American Gold medal in Individual Foil-Fencing, beating her Russian competitor 15-13. She finished 5th in 2012 and 10th in 2016 so quite the improvement in Olympic performance!

She's also a member of TEAM MILK!
