The 29-year-old will become the 14th Time Lord on the popular science fiction show, and the first person of colour to play the lead role.
Scottish actor Gatwa, who was born in Rwanda, is best known for starring in Netflix's sitcom Sex Education.

29 is a bit young, I'm not familiar with the actor's work. For the record I really don't care that he's black.

All I know about him is that he is part of Netflix's whatever Sex Education. I'm presuming and assuming here, but I want nothing to do anything Netflix did with it.

I will freely admit I AM NOT the target audience for Doctor Who as it's nothing I've ever gotten into. So...my opinion is worth as much as it took me to type this.

I am concerned he is not old enough for the role; he is more the age of a more typical companion and probably can't play off well being an vastly old alien. But I guess I too am not the target audience; they seem to have little intention of retaining the fanbase that had been built up over the years. I gave up on the show entirely and didn't watch the latest season after being incredibly bored or downright perturbed by the show for the previous season. I guess this is going to be like Star Trek where it's just dead to me now and I just appreciate and collect the classic material and if they ever make it good again I may return then.

He's only a year younger than Peter Davison.

By the time any episode is made or aired he'll be the same age.

sigh The guy is one of those people that makes his orientation a key factor in how he acts, talks, and thinks. He's not just a regular guy that happens to be gay, like Barrowman.

Let's see: Black, a "mincing" gay (yes, like those in Pride Parades who were fetish gear), and apparently a "Scotsman" born in fucking Africa (yeah, like that makes sense). sigh

On the upside, he may refuse the role: Apparently the backlash has been so bad on social-media that he's genuinely worried being the Doctor will kill his career, like how it's done with Jodie's (her agent was basically begging her to leave the role during her second year, apparently. So, uh, yeah).

The sad thing is that picking Woke Doctors is the least of the their problems.

The shows Writing and plotlines are the biggest problems and long time fans like me jumped ship long before Jodie become a new Doctor. Personally I thought the last season with Matt Smith already was having some problems with decent plot lines. It is just that the cast was good enough to still carry the show especially as Rory and Clara ascompanions.

But by the end of the frist season of Peter Capaldi and great plot twists like Sonic Sunglasses it was hard to watch. I even tried a few epsodies with Jodie as the Doctor. Overall they where more forgettable and boring then anything else which to me is the wrost thing a peice of fiction can be.

So maybe a new Doctor with some better writers can bring the show back to tbe level of epsodies like A Good Man Goes To War.

Capaldi, however, was a great Doctor: He was just severely let down by the writing and directing. And Clara. Fucking Hell, Clara "Mary Sue" Oswald.

And then we had Bill "I'm Black and lesbian and I mention it every two episodes!" Potts.

Yeah.

At least Capaldi was a good Doctor: Jodie's acting is wooden and just flat in addition to the awful writing/storylines she gets.

What, after all of the fuckups they are still persisting by shoveling out more shit?
I am no fan of Dr. Who fan, but as a genre fan I can only say that what they have done with the series is sacrilege, and they should let it die.
let all the fans have the memories and they should find an original vehicle for their woke mental diarrhea.

I dropped out of watching Doctor Who on Capaldi's last series, I could already tell it was getting to be a progressive propaganda show that I didn't want to support. This guy...I don't know. It feels weird to have an African actor play the Doctor. Not necessarily wrong, just weird. Part of a pattern of making characters and roles that are traditionally played by men of white European descent into not that because replacing white men is good I guess. It can work storywise because of the Time Lord regeneration and all that, but it's still part of the pattern. Anyways, not something that really affects me since I don't really watch Doctor Who anymore (does anyone?)

Time Lords regenerating into different ethnicities and of the opposite gender is a creative thing they introduced in the last decade or so, IIRC (unless it was mentioned in Big Finish's stuff over the last ten, twenty or so years). In-universe, it's always been possible.

The first mention was when the 11th Doctor mentioned that an old friend of his, the Corsair, was a "bad girl" when they regenerated as female: They always got the same tattoo though per regeneration, so that's how he recognized the severed arm in that episode with the Sapient House eating Time Lords and TARDIS' (the Doctor's Wife).

Since then it's been retconned that all Time Lords can do it (mentioned by Missy/the Master, seen when the General regenerated back into a Black chick from an old White dude, then the writers using it to take a shot at males by having the General say, "How can you men have that much ego" or something).

In reality? Pre-2014 (IIRC that was when The Doctor's Wife aired), Time Lords always regenerated into the same gender and same ethnicity; Hell, fucking Romana was swapping appearances like she was changing clothes (which is why she looked like Princess Astra -- in reality the same actress signing on because they liked her acting so much. I think there was something more to it as well like she was marrying or fucking one of the Doctors. I dunno).

The change was done because of a) the BBC. 'nuff said and b) pandering to the less than 3% of the population that's of the Kitchen Sink Community -- and much less of that 3% even watch the show.

So, yeah.
