She was really old and not exactly in top condition. Something broke and she dropped dead; perhaps it's less common than a transitory period of being bedridden but certainly not rare.

I don't disagree with that sentence per se, but I'm not sure what you're driving at with respect to any particular topic of discussion.

It's a common modern-day misconception that "anti-slavery" correlated to "not very racist" (by our standards) back then.

Well, there was technically that thing for a few days, but no, I think he simply means that when the state of California was added to the Union (became a state instead of territory), it was as a "free state" instead of a "slave state"; in other words, "free state" means "no slavery".

I'm not here to argue that there is no possible legitimate use of attack dogs. But I don't think it's worth it. But for the sake of educating me more on this topic, "stun"?

Sounds like they only want to ban using police dogs for apprehension. In other words, using the dogs to attack people. I am 100% in favor of this. It could be that many of the people supporting this have spurious reasons. I find it hard to care. This is an area where I think excessive force and...

Legislators aren't the only ones crafting law, though. Term limits strengthen the influence of lobbyists, which I would argue is the opposite of what we want to do. I'm more sympathetic to term limits that are very high (20 years?) or age limits. Hopefully the push to ban stock trading among...

I believe she had already signaled a long time ago that she was done as Speaker after 2022 no matter what happened. I wasn't aware she was also quitting her job as Representative, though. I'll be curious to see if this rumor is accurate.

Nothing per se, but it would mean that the entire past decade of population growth and then some had been reversed. And it would be on track to lose several House seats after 2030. And in the meantime, of course, serious economic effects from shedding that much population.

I mean, 20+ years ago Louisiana was basically a swing state so who the hell knows. Amazing. And if you squint hard enough that white haze almost looks kinda like California. Or a dildo. But seriously, it's refreshing to be reminded of good old American scientific prowess and exploration. And...

They're trying to solidify newfound strength in GA and AZ; trying to turn NC into the next GA; and trying to flip TX because it will make presidential elections much easier to win in the current electoral landscape if...

Well, the first part isn't true, but apparently California does import more than a quarter of its electricity, so base load increases increase this dependency accordingly. Despite this, it plans to close its one remaining nuclear power plant (two reactors), which according to Wikipedia is due to...

Isn't it fluctuations in power draw that are usually the problem, not increases in base load? I'd think that people would be on average more likely to be charging their cars in off-peak hours, but that's just a gut feeling; I'm certainly open to evidence to the contrary. Or do you mean a...
