The majority of the US also wasn't in favor of getting involved in WWII. FDR knew the Japanese were going to attack Pearl Harbor because the USN was basically reading the IJN's mail. His administration made the Japanese ambassador sent to deliver the DOW wait until after the attack started so...

Germany pretty much did everything they could to irritate and goad a very "we want no part of this" US into siding with the Entente. The offer in the Zimmerman telegram - which the Mexican government was not receptive to and rejected BTW - was pretty much the last straw and broke the camel's back.

It is virtue signalling. ASHRAE Standard 189.1 and the building codes said that Penn State's new hockey arena needed 250kW of solar panels in 2012. Yeah, that didn't happen because Penn State couldn't afford it. The reason I know this is because I was one of the architects and engineers involved.

Which makes this "turn down the thermostats" even more stupid. Rivers have flow rates which are somewhat predictable and a nuclear reactor does not like it when the output setting is changed. Neither is going from off to redline in a few seconds and the latter wants to be operating at...

The Swiss are being dumb here. My car's lowest heat setting is 65°F and the steam heat my parents' home gives when it's running at idle means that some windows need to be open when when it's above 32°F. They're being doubly dumb because, in the dead of winter, interior spaces still need air...

Meanwhile ... In '98? The Saudis said "fuck you, stop cheating" to the rest of OPEC by opening up their wells and flooding the oil market so badly that gas prices in the US briefly dropped to less than $0.65/gal to proove a point: "We can afford to do this, you can not."

It's 672' wide and the channel is ~78ft deep. That's not narrow "in certain spots". Narrow would be the Panama canal. All of the American fast battleships were designed and built with a beam (108') and draft (39'6") restriction so that they would be able to fit through the locks EDIT: 108ft...

Eh, wrong. The US could lose all three to nukes and shrug it off. - New Orleans is below sea level and a hurricane can flatten the city, again. (see: Katrina) - There really isn't much in Houston the US needs except for NASA mission control. - Pittsburg? You're joking, right? Let me laugh...

Sorta. Those gas turbines don't care what flammable liquid they're being fed as long as it's burning at about the right temperature. The fuel pumps, OTOH, do care a great deal about what's flowing through them.

The only powerplants which can run on crude have oil-fired steam boilers. The USN relies on gas turbines, diesel engines, and nuclear reactors. If the USN has to once again start relying on oil-fired boilers to go anywhere my 43yr old crippled ass is getting drafted.

I prefer to use American customary units. I do not use French metric bullshit unless I absolutely have to and do convert between measurement systems with ease. My height is damn near exactly six nano light-seconds if that's the measurement system you wish to use.

When I was hospitalized for a most of April and May I actually had to try just to get a meal from the hospital menu that came close to two McDonald's triple cheesburgers and a cup of water. The food was tasty (it has to be or a patient won't eat it) but it wasn't calorie dense and I was ordering...

"I'm not fat, I'm just big boned." More seriously, a lot of Americans simply don't have the time or money for a proper diet and American meal portions are also enormous. I'm not sure what it's called in Bulgaria, but a "large" Big Mac combo with a Coke from a McDonald's drive-through is...
