Star Trek The General Star Trek Thread - From TOS to Corporate Schenanigans

Star Trek could really use XO's like Senior Lieutanant Kirika from my story Tintagel. She looks a pre-teen but is actually about the same age as the human captain she's extending a hand of friendship to while knowing that his ship, despite being several thousand times more massive than hers...

I'll take that as a mod directive. Please give me a threadban so I don't go off-topic again.

Give me some time and it will be done if I get around to it because here's how many sheets of paper it takes to fully describe what's needed to build a 19th century warship: four sheets of 36"x48", and that's it.

When Hancock was captured she had already captured a British warship (HMS Fox, which was retaken). It wasn't easy for the Brits.

You want good. The British couldn't figure out why HMS Iris (ex-USS Hancock) was the fastest and quickest frigate they had despite having captured her after chasing her for 39 hours before she surrendered.

Yes, I do. If you can easily look up the plans for ships the US no longer uses then ST producers really have no business charging for the Sci-Fi stuff they use except to say "here's how much the .pdf cost for you to download".

That doesn't seem like a good deal because a lot of info - like Perry-class deck plans - is available with just a Google search: https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/3/3a/Oliver_Hazard_Perry-class_frigate_%28long_hull%29_outboard_profile.jpg

Depends on the price difference. Streaming: see if you like it enough to buy a copy. Sorta like watching network TV. Physical Copy: I like it enough to fork over <<insert number here>> for the series. When TNG/DS9/VOY were first coming out on DVD it was $140/season (B5 was $100/season).

That'll only work in a setting where combat doesn't happen.

Damage severity in ST is driven by the plot. In one episode the ship could look like it's been shoved through a meatgrinder while everyone is ok and all systems remain operational. In another some spilled coffee in engineering means "all hands, abandon ship". Hyperbole, I know, but you get the...

It's a news aggregator with a comment section filled with people who are just there for "pass the popcorn". Drew Curtis - the site's owner - ran for Kentucky Governer in 2015. It's full of trolls.

A warship with a crew of about 50 doesn't even have a sickbay. The officers' wardroom is where casualties are taken and their dining room table is where emeregency surgeries are done by someone who probably isn't a doctor.

The Defiant-class is basically "this is an actual Federation warship" and even that's a "hotel in space" in terms of crew accommodations compared to what I'd design.

He also posts on Fark from time-to-time. They have a special tag just for him, which is kinda saying something because Fark is not known for being nice and the kinds of fuckery they can get up to when they don't like someone is, shall we say, "interesting".

Child actors often don't become superstars. @Lord Sovereign, The "kids" who were midshipman in Master and Commander actually outranked everyone but Captain Aubrey, Lt. Pullings, and Lt. Mowett. At the end of the film, in ST terms, Midshipman Blakley basically has Data's job.

I think ST always did itself a disserive when the creators strayed too far from the TOS/TNG layout. Once you've got a design paradigm you should stick to it.

You're nuts. ;) I would say "batshit crazy" if I couldn't say that using a quarter of a mile of 30" wide paper just to print something so I can review it wasn't a day ending in "-y".

Very complicated is an understatement. I've read parts of that rulebook and it makes wading through the mess that is me reviewing and approving the shop drawings for something I designed and wrote the spec for look easy. Making sense of the Star Fleet Battles rulebooks? "Here's a loaded fiream...
