Federalized Austria Survives First World War

Yes, I actually do think that it was more courageous for Poles to save Jews relative to, say, French because as you said, AFAIK entire Polish families were murdered by the Nazis for sheltering Jews, whereas this was not the case with French families, et cetera who sheltered Jews.

90% of Polish Jews were, in fact, murdered by the Germans. The only reason that this percentage isn't even higher than that is because over 200,000 Polish Jews managed to survive the Holocaust by being deported by Stalin to the Soviet interior before the start of Operation Barbarossa.

Are you sure about that? Sometimes they do live among whites, such as in Oak Park, Illinois, which pursued a carefully designed integration policy that essentially only accepted middle- and upper-class blacks: https://www.theamericanconservative.com/race-real-estate-oak-park-chicago/

But I do wonder just how many of the Ostjuden elsewhere will eventually adopt the ways of their "more civilized" Western European brethren. Assimilation, intermarriage, celebrating Christmas, et cetera.

Another question: @stevep @Skallagrim @Circle of Willis @raharris1973 @sillygoose @Aldarion If Austria-Hungary survives, are the differences between Eastern European Jewry and Western European Jewry still gradually going to become less significant over time? In real life, the shared horrors and...

Yep, excellent description and analysis, Skallagrim! That's exactly what the butterfly effect is!

Butterfly effect. Maria won't necessarily be born female in this TL. BTW, @stevep, do you know why the Hapsburgs never acquired Bavaria?

Federalized Austria Survives First World War

Ironically Russian soldiers wanted a quick end to WWI but ended up getting two bloodier wars instead: The RCW and WWII. And this is not to mention the Holodomor, 1930s purges, and late 1940s famine.

Yes, and? The US and Germany are military allies. Doesn't mean that the US wants to annex Germany. And in any case, a Polish military alliance with Russia would be a good thing for Poland since it would mean that Russia would be militarily committed to the defense of the Polish Corridor.

Re: Hungary: The US of GA plan would primarily be a bad deal for Hungary because it would strip Hungary of a lot of its population, industries, and natural resources. AFAIK, Hungary really struggled for this reason in the immediate post-WWI years in real life. The Croat population in Hungary was...

FWIW, apparently Czech historian and politician Frantisek Palacky (1798-1876) advocated a federal system for Austria-Hungary, as this 1908 book mentions here: https://babel.hathitrust.org/cgi/pt?id=wu.89092569052&view=1up&seq=527&q1=federal

Federalized Austria Survives First World War

You still need a casus belli. An Austro-Hungarian civil war, troubles in Ottoman Armenia, et cetera. Poland could still come into existence again if Russia goes Communist. It will be a rump Poland, though. Not very. But a more moderate eventual Russian Revolution is more possible. A lot of...

Federalized Austria Survives First World War

@Aldarion Really, it would have benefitted both Serbia and Romania to join A-H if they were rational about this, and assuming that WWI would not have broken out by then. They could have been made their own federal units when combined with Bosnia + Dalmatia (for Serbia) and with Transylvania +...

Federalized Austria Survives First World War

Difficult to do due to Russia's greater strength, no? Unless of course Russia is distracted elsewhere, such as being involved in another war with Japan. And if Russia is too weak, then would there really be an imperative for the CPs to spark a new war? And would their people actually tolerate...

Federalized Austria Survives First World War

Would Poland be willing to fight for the Sudetenland along with the Anglo-French in this TL? Just how effective would the Anglo-French be in sending supplies to the East in such a scenario? Would Italy allow them to move supplies through its own territory or would they have to move these...

You do know that FF was very anti-war, right?
  19. W

Federalized Austria Survives First World War

@sillygoose argued elsewhere on this forum that FF gave up on trialism/the United States of Greater Austria plan and instead wanted to keep A-H's dualist federal structure intact but simply to implement universal suffrage in Hungary. And for a war to still break out, an alternate trigger needs...
