Probably pretty well, if you were to take a newly-made Roman road.

You ignore the fact that the Roman roads still lasted far, far longer than the modern ones do. Basically: Roman road can handle the combined traffic of a hundred years or more before needing serious repairs. Modern road: barely lasts a decade or less before needing a serious repair.
