    First two shaft ship?

Several American Civil War ironclads had twin screws, so they were reasonably common a solution to multiple engines by October 1861.

Mass Effect Mass Effect general thread

ME1 threw the universe out there. It created the wonder. ME2 is what the universe feel like a universe. It got ever so bigger, less black and white, and we saw the seedy underbelly. Especially as we added plots for the supporting characters. ME3 felt like a contraction, removing the aspects that...

Has the Prime Directive caused more problems than prevented for the Federation

Six of one, half-dozen of the other. We never got a clear picture of why Tracy stayed planetside, and if he was interfering prior to EXETER’s crew dying, or only after. But, again, it’s the kind of situation which might make people put more teeth into the Prime Directive. It’s human nature to...

Has the Prime Directive caused more problems than prevented for the Federation

Yes, but it was Merrick who let them know about the Federation. Ron Tracy was in the same kind of situation with the Koms and the Yangs. But both chose to interfere in the existing societies for their own benefit.

Has the Prime Directive caused more problems than prevented for the Federation

Yup. Even with the Prime Directive, you still did, like Ron Tracy and John Gill. Which may well explain why Picard and others were stickier about it.

Has the Prime Directive caused more problems than prevented for the Federation

Kirk’s crew had as many examples of interfence being bad as good. John Gill on Ekos, Sigma Iota II, Ron Tracy, Merrick, etc. A technologically advanced civilization interfering in the development of a less-advanced one is frought with risk. As a default course, it is absolutely a good idea. But...

Moving South, anything I should know?

No, pray the big box stores are not sold out of window units. And never live anywhere you can’t use a window unit in a pinch.

Moving South, anything I should know?

Expedite. Honestly, walking will leave you less gross than biking. But there is a reason Southerners are languid. The humidity is a killer, and exertion is like taking a shower in your clothes. Move slowly. A brisk walk when it’s 105 and 30% humidity is a lot less miserable than one when it’s...

Moving South, anything I should know?

Unless you are extremely fit, you probably want to reconsider this. Biking a mile in an Alabama summer will have you ridiculously sweaty and smelly wherever you go. When I say ridiculously sweaty, I mean it - worse than the most energetic gym session crossed with the most ardent fuck you’ve...

Alabama, or Auburn for those who hate Alabama :p

Moving South, anything I should know?

My experience is being a skinny-ass twink with a pixie cut in Kentucky and West Virginia, and a huskier guy in Tennessee. Southern guys can be hella cute. As long as you’re not a dick about it, or engaging in ridiculous PDA, most people will not care. Dating pool will be more limited than...

Star Trek Star Trek Picard Discussion Thread

If there was overt lesbian homosexuality in Voyager, it wasn’t Seven and Janeway. That was more mother-daughter rebellion. The overt lesbian themes were between Seven and the Borg Queen. The Borg Queen behaved more like psychotic ex to Seven than anything else. We explicitly saw those overtones...

Star Trek Star Trek Picard Discussion Thread

Picard specifically called Q out in Q Who, asking if the lesson could have been taught without loss. Q pretty much noped that. Picard paid for his arrogance. Q kept it from being fatal, though. On the other hand, Tapestry was teaching Picard to embrace the virtues of his vices. The brash...

Star Trek Star Trek Picard Discussion Thread

It’s not Picard’s morality that Q is looking for. It’s Picard’s ability to grow mentally and think non-linearly. That’s why Q breaks the rules and gives Picard the big hint, taking him back in time to show the anomaly works backwards in time, and is bigger in the past. In that moment, you see Q...

Star Trek Star Trek Picard Discussion Thread

How much of that was the Romulans bringing it upon themselves? Tell someone you’re going to kill them and killing a lot of their fellows is a good way to get them to bring in allies. We don’t know if the Romulans were correct or not, because we don’t know what the advanced synthetic beings...

Star Trek Star Trek Picard Discussion Thread

Picard is privileged, though. He gave Starfleet an ultimatum, stormed off to sulk when he didn’t get his way, dropped the ball on a lot of people, and got to sit at home at his chateau sipping red wine while things went to hell. Picard’s moral dudgeon was much more fashionable in the 2360s...

What If? “Mechanical Teachers” existed & were cheap & mass produced?

We are in the middle of a giant test of distance learning and non-classroom instruction. I suspect we will find it works well for some, and miserably for others.

What If? “Mechanical Teachers” existed & were cheap & mass produced?

Can it ascertain why the student does not understand? Can it identify where the student’s mistake is in their flow? Or is it merely able to determine if you filled in the right multiple choice answer or put the right number in the box?

Star Trek Star Trek Picard Discussion Thread

I can also see the Federation unwilling to impose law and order in the borderlands. My big question is just how the borderlands and places like Freecloud got going. The Fenris Rangers needing to fill the vacuum after Romulus goes boom and the Romulan empire breaks up implies they were former...
