All humor over the Duc de Nouvelle Ass aside, I feel like this is a bizarro land response compared to the way RL intersex athletes are treated for having a completely natural biological condition that isn't even scientifically proven to have any statistically significant performance effect at all, versus an artificially engineered condition that is massively performance enhancing to the point where no one else can compete.

------

Spoiler cut for a pile of biology geekery. The TL;DR is that wwhile it is of course well-understood that testosterone supplementation is performance-enhancing, there is (surprisingly) a distinct lack of evidence that higher levels of natural testosterone are performance-enhancing.

When intersex athletes were placed on the same testosterone level restrictions as transgender athletes, this was challenged in court as having no basis in fact; the International Olympic Committee (to its own surprise) was forced to concede that it had no evidence that higher natural testosterone gave an unfair competitive advantage, as this had simply always been assumed true in the context of transgender athletes, and the court placed a moratorium on enforcement of the new rules until the IOC was able to provide evidence.

The evidence the IOC ultimately presented was incredibly thin; it was a mathematical survey analysis of performance versus blood testosterone level across all Olympic sports, only showed disparities when comparing the highest tertile to the lowest tertile. In other words, the athletes were divided into three groups of equal size rather than grouping athletes that had "restricted" T levels versus 'typical' and 'below typical' levels. The high-testosterone third had narrowly higher performance than the lowest-testosterone third, but neither group was significantly different than the middle-third. Out of all Olympic women's sports, only five showed any statistically significant disparity between groups, and that disparity was minimal: less than a 3% difference in all but one sport, with the outlier being 4.5%. There was no statistically significant disparity on the basis of testosterone in men's sports, aside from the curious finding that all male Olympians in all throwing sports had substantially lower testosterone levels than male Olympians in all other sports -- not just the winners, but all Olympians in those sports across the board.

Nonetheless, the court ruled that as long as the IOC had the slightest shred of evidence (which it previously did not!), it could make any rules it saw fit, even in the sports where the study found no evidence of a competitive advantage.

Edit: Just to explicitly highlight, the most glaring flaw in this study is that they not only did not exclude, but did not separately analyze athletes who were found to be doping. In other words, the study design literally makes it impossible to determine whether the "superior" performance of the high-testosterone tertile was actually the female athletes who were doping with T, the female athletes who had abnormally high natural T levels, or even just the female athletes who were within typical T ranges, but were grouped into the high tertile. For that matter, any actual transgender female athletes would have been in the middle or low tertile, because they were not allowed to compete without being under suppression; only intersex female athletes were exempt.

I'm not a big fan of the big Colony Habs stuck in the middle of nowhere just to manufacture pop/industry.

I would say we should have the tech on standby, but we should only use it if there's a critical industrial or strategic need.
You are aware that, by the time you have a strategic need requiring emergency infrastructure, it's too late to pre-position emergency infrastructure.

Of course.

In no way was I suggesting that this would be a tool to meet IMMEDIATE tactical needs. It's a tool so that we can access strategic materials in 'dead' systems, or something that allows us to place a deep space naval facility.

My point was more that I don't want us to see this as a way to inhabit EVERY system we run across no matter what's there. There MUST be a strategic necessity that requires this setup so that we can exploit said necessity.

You don't want to put them into every system while there are other systems that make more sense to colonize\inhabit with traditional colonies... But, once we've got all the other colonies operating at a net profit, then there's no reason NOT to start deploying those stations.

So we’re just going to blobbing until we hit the Near Periphery, another power, or finally find a Black Steel base? That is acceptable, though I hope we see some ground combat soon, just to test the toys we have in the closet.
