Culture I saw the trailer for Star Trek Lower Decks......killll meeee.

I managed to make a few posts and saw the like/dislike ratio before it vanished. It was about 4k5 dislikes to about 2k3 likes I think? Pretty much most of the comments I saw were shit talking it and I have to agree. STD and Picard would honestly feel far more at home in the Mirror Universe and if they'd actually been set in the Mirror Universe, I'd dislike them a lot less. Hell, it would be a great point of divergence as I recall Spock telling Kirk in TOS that Starfleet have never court marshalled anyone in it's history and then you have Burnham. It would have been a good example of a single person's actions causing a complete shift in a timeline. Picard is just garbage and CBS even admitted that it was partly written in the way it was to take down Picard which I couldn't even imagine why that would have occurred to anyone at all but it was produced by Alex Kurtzman who loathes Stark Trek.

Lower Decks looks like they're trying to over-correct at warp speed and steal a bit from The Orville in terms of humour. I'm honestly not at all looking forward to it and I'm not even sure if I'll bother watching more than one or two episodes but considering the latest Star Trek TV series and movies, I have absolutely no hope that it'll be a good Star Trek series.

Funny enough the orville actually feels like star trek albiet a less utopion "more realistic yet still optamistic." sort of way. Lower decks just feels like a rick and Morty parody of star trek.

I quite like the Orville for much the same reason. It's probably the most Star Trek thing on TV at the moment. If they toned down the jokes a bit more it could honestly pass for Star Trek.

I wish they tone down the crudeness a bit, but not totally eliminate the common man conversation. that kind of small talk and joking around is honestly probably what would happen in a real life setting. People on a ship don't discuss plato's republic using old age vernacular, or brag about "We've grown past our infancy." Granted Seth Farline is still seth farline but it still good all things considering. At least I don't feel dirty watching it compared to his "Adult" animations.

It seemed amusing enough. In short bursts and given the chance to do more than just be zany, it might smooth out some stuff that falls flat.

The Falklands are Serbian, you cowards.
It occurred to me the other day that you can track the consensus of America's elite class by the themes of the Star Trek of the time:

Star Trek: I don't see color. Also it's imperative for Space America to defeat the Space Commies in order to protect space freedom. Also, hippies are dumb even when they have a point.

Star Trek TNG: A kinder, gentler leadership is needed to build consensus in the New Galactic Order. The most urgent issue is a masturbatory philosophical debate with a godlike but useless being.

Star Trek Deep Space Nine: We should sympathize with the plight of the Space Palestinians, but not too much. Also, the shapeshifting infiltrator is a good guy.

Star Trek Voyager: Let's put a woman in charge. What's the worst that can happen?

Star Trek Discovery: Let's put an angry black woman in charge. What's the worst that can happen?

Star Trek Lower Decks: Can I put it in my ass? Let's find out!

Let me try:

Star Trek: We can achieve a better world where a person is not defined by the outside appearance as much as merit of their character. if we work together as a team, w can body go where no man has gone before.

Star Trek TNG: What defines a man and his worth? Can he overcome the mistakes and demons of his past, or is he forever doomed to walk an endless cycle of self destruction.

Star Trek Deep Space Nine: Don't be so quick to trust with open arms. Outside appearances can hide the evil appearances underneath, however this works in reverse as well. The collective does not define the individual.

Star Trek Voyager:
the unknown is not a glamorous place, it's scary and fraught with danger, when you find yourself trapped in the middle of it with no reference point back home it can be made that much worse, but if your willing to work hard and put petty differences aside, you just might be able to make it back home and be even more the wiser for it.

Star trek Enterprise: Here is how we got from A to B also time travel is involved.

Star Trek Discovery: Something something girl power something something orange man bad.

Star trek picard: "Muh white privilege."

Star Trek Lower decks: Rick and Morty was Popular right.....RIGHT
?!?

yeah, you can tell the early 2000s onward was when star trek became more mainstreamed.

I mean, you say that, but its my understanding The next Generation was pretty mainstream television: maybe it didn't do as well as, I don't remember what was on TV in the 90s. Was Law And Order already a thing? But, I don't recall it being particularly obscure television.

Is there some ranking of most popular tv shows by year? to see the scale of the penitration into culture?

Nah, this show could only exist if you love Star Trek, like Galaxy Quest and The Orville.

Like, the thing about CBS Trek is that it leans toward having its head up its own ass about being serious business, and not letting itself acknowledge how goofy the situations and stories are. But then, that's kind of to be expected, because everyone has focused on how serious and meaningful the franchise has been, while ignoring the humor and goofiness, like they were super embarrassed.

And honestly, I'm fine with CBS making their super srs bsns Trek as long as they make stuff like this that goes into the absurdities of Trek. It's like Gundam - having their super goofy toy battling spinoff made them going super dark with Iron-Blooded Orphans totally fine, because it gave the audience something to use as a breather or alternative if they didn't like one or the other.
No, this show could only exist in a television landscape that has both Rick and Morty, as well as Teen Titans Go!; it would have never been given the go ahead by the network execs otherwise. Well, that and the fact that Alex Kurtzman has all but killed the franchise, meaning they're desperate enough to air anything at this point to try and salvage its reputation.

When Star Trek (any generation) was on here, it was on usually at 18:00 on one of the week days which was prime time TV. Law & Order like shows were then usually on at 21:00 or later.

If you're still having doubts about Lower Decks, check out these excerpts from the book the showrunner did before this:

Oddly enough, Teen Titans Go! Allowed for the season 6, which is either done or still being made, of the original series to be made. So give them some credit. Very little is still some.

Rick and Morty was good at the start, (Being the Immature young adult at the time, and still immature adult I am now) I find it has grown, staler. Then again I still find Family guy funny so. *Shrugs*

Star trek though is not the kinda thing I would like to be a funny adult oriented animated show... Like... It is to much of... a technobabble universe to be made into such a thing, or at least I thought so at one point

Season 6 of the original Teen Titans has only been announced so far; personally, I doubt it'll actually happen. Even if it does, I expect it to fall quite short of the quality of the original show, so I'm not planning on watching it.

As for Rick and Morty... I'm sorry, but that show is simply too morally disgusting for it to hold my interest. The same holds true for Family Guy; I just don't find anything appealing about watching horrible people doing horrible things.

TvTropes I recall tried saying how different Rick & Morty is from the usual “Adult Animation”

  • Rick and Morty is often seen as an example of this trope "done right". A lot of the humor is extremely sophomoric, with phallic imagery, burp/fart jokes, pop culture references and violence galore; however, much like Bojack Horseman, it plays the consequences of a lot of these jokes completely straight for the sake of furthering the story and developing the characters, who even at their flattest are much more fleshed out and three-dimensional than a good deal of the show's contemporaries. The most notable of this is the writers' conscious decision to make the occasional verbal rape joke while playing every instance of the act itself completely for horror, illustrating the difference between making jokesabout rape and thinking rape is funny.
TBF, there’s a bit of a point there, given that Jellybean King’s actually portrayed for horror

WB has not done horribly with their newer shows. I have hope.

As for Rick and MOrty, it was good at first but the ravage and help ruin it. Family guy I just find funny

Why not just go and say it's a parody show and use a different name than Star Trek? Oh wait, same reason why there has to be a female Doctor Who and a black female Doctor Who

Because "legacies" are easier for getting viewers, theoretically
