My attempt at a bit of amateur art

I've been suffering from major depression, among other things lately, and I've tried to find some new interests. My friend is an amateur artist, but is quite good, and I thought I would give it a go myself. This is a copy of a book cover about French Art Nouveau style, and is not quite finished yet, it's also my first attempt, but I hope to get better. Started with pencils then some water colourls.

It's relaxing to look out and a pretty picture at the beach; I like the Art Nouveau, and it's comfortable and you capture expressiveness very well. Congratulations, it's pleasant!

What can be improved: The body of the girl is very elongated with some effort needed in the proportion of the torso.

Now, for a first attempt, the fact is, I'm quite amazed "what can be improved" is so short, so take that as a matter of pride.

Well this is the original source picture, and it is a bit elongated and not quite in proportion. It's one reason I tried, one I like art nouveau and art deco, and secondly it's a bit more simplistic than some art styles, at least some of them.

My next attempt. On a note, I hate drawing hands. This is not my pic, but what I'm copying and I will do a background, perhaps a street scene.

Good luck Comrade. After you've finished with the ladies will you be moving onto warships next? 🙏;)

I doubt it, I like that style of art, art nouveau, art deco, pin up art (as you might guess by the name) but also sci fi and fantasy character art from the likes of Vallejo, Frazetta and Elmore.

Art deco, sounds nice. Think I like the first two styles of art in the realm of architecture so, I am looking forward to those. Even if my appreciation is stuck in that realm. Art tastes can be rather particular can they not?

So I joined a local art club, there was a workshop trying pastel chalks which are finicky, messy and damned difficult to work with.

I used a photo from a book cover as a basis to try and replicate, well as much as I could in about an hour and a half and my first ever attempt....

This was the photo from a photographic book about Pripyat, Chernobyl and the surrounding area.

This was the rather sketchy (no pun intended), result.

It looks better from a distance.

In trying new medium, it'll take some getting used to it. This is good. Different colors and shades can be distinguished. You blend them well. Try other scenery too, so you can practice more and you can compare.

Next project is to do a pic with the theme "Her hair was gold and her eyes were blue", so to find a subject. I've got some pinup and fantasy art, also some books with old Hollywood stars.

That's pretty good wish I knew how to draw that instead of sticks :ROFLMAO:. In all honesty, though, it's a pretty nice picture there.
