As I recall he had a vacation to there planned at the same time that big blizzard hit Texas a few years ago.
I can't remember if he still went or not, but the media went nuts with trashing him for having a planned vacation during a disaster.
On the one hand, sure vacations during disasters look bad. On the other hand he's a senator. What can he really do?
Regardless, it was way overblown.

Pretty sure it wasn't planned. Blizzard hits, his family is like "let's get outta here," so they go to Cancun. That's what I recall happening.
It was bad optics. Realistically, what's he going to do, though? He's just a senator. He can't make any real different there. He should have known better though, being a career politician.
He flew with his family to Cancun to travel with them. Then he hopped a flight right back to the states.

I'm not even attacking him for this. I don't care that he went to Cancun. I just felt that he should know the optics that will have, and as a career politician he should know better than to give his enemies ammunition to use against him.

Say what you will about Obama, but he’s way more “smooth” in social situations than any other modern politician I can think of.
Granted, that’s not saying much when his competition is Clinton, Dubya, Trump, and now Biden. But honestly, I can see why lots of people fell for all his “flash” while caring less about his “substance”, at least at first.
