Here's the thing: while a new design round would be fun to do out of character, I question its utility for the cost *in character*. The declining importance and increasingly niche role of ASFs is a natural consequence of the way vehicle design has been set up in BTech, and is not something we can or should try to fight off by throwing money at. That money is better spent on DropShips and WarShips.

The military attache from the embassy to the NRI forwards some video to you, as well as to the intelligence teams. The NRI has finally jumped on the Mech bandwagon with their first completely indigenous design, the Legion medium mech. And it is pretty obvious that they are not the sort to accept received wisdom in mech design. It’s a 55 ton bipedal design that has rather obviously been styled after a classical Roman soldier, but they went so far as to include a full scutum and gladius into the design, on the left and right arms respectively, with a gauss rifle mounted in a highly flexible shoulder mount that, when ‘stowed’ rotates up and out of the way.

You aren’t that sold on the design philosophy, even seeing the test footage showing platoons of the mechs interlocking their shields and advancing, enduring levels of incoming fire against those shields that would stagger assault mechs. The downside is that they are slow, they can’t mount any weapons on the entire left half of the mech, and lose most if not all of the offensive punch that makes mechs so valuable.

It’s a trade off you wouldn’t make, but the Romans evidently find it valuable.

You also get word that their automated primitive jumpship production yard has finally been successfully brought back online building conventional jumpships, in this case a licensed variant of the commercial Carrack design. Trade is expected to pick up with the NRI, although some in the shipping industry are heard muttering about the loss of their monopolies.

The fact that the Romans are referring to the jumpships as the Jupiter class has your internal antenna twitching, however. Twitching which turns into full up shudders as further news comes in that every single one of them has an on-board shrine. Which you strongly suspect…

And Thanh has sent you an article from a magazine that was allowed on board the lead ship of the class… yup, it’s a shrine to you as Jupiter, and Thanh is laughing at you about it.

That she sends you a toga along with the magazine article… sisters. And your wife thinks it’s absolutely hilarious.

The Department of Periphery Studies is up to their usual shenanigans, with a large demonstration occurring in the square around the Palace calling for ‘Legalizing Legalizing Legalized Legalizations’. Nobody has the foggiest idea what they’re talking about, considering that the leaders insist on answering all questions with chants of LEGALIZE IT, with absolutely no frame of reference as to what ‘it’ is. Some of the professional teaching assistants of the Department confess that they’d been showing a courtroom drama marathon to the distinguished professors, which may have sparked this, but they’re not sure either.

There’s a bit of a scare on Calliope at the LAM factory as more squirrels are sighted around the vehicle park. Thankfully they are run off before they can nibble through any brake lines or cause any more havoc than they already have. And then the project survives a lawsuit from a local environmental organization claiming that the squirrels are extremely endangered, which is countered when it is dryly pointed out that their claim is contingent on the squirrels in that given area being different from squirrels elsewhere in the same region, which is easily disproved. The group that filed that claim is currently being investigated for fraud, as it turns out many of their claims pretty much came down to ‘well, this particular critter lives at 12th Street and Highland, which makes it a totally different, and critically endangered, critter than the same critter at 16th Street and Bethany Home.’

But you have your new LAM factory, which is all that really matters.

You attend keel laying ceremonies for the first batch of Fletcher class Destroyers in person, while sending a congratulatory message for the commissioning of the mass of new dropships that have come into service. You do attend commissioning ceremonies for each of the new Dart class vessels, as well as those for the slew of new Daggers.

Military procurement goes exceptionally well, with the operational LAM factory managing to turn out more mechs than expected, combined with an unusually fruitful training class yielding sufficient pilots for them. Two regiments when you were expecting one is always a nice surprise when they are friendly!

Due to the number of LAMs being built a specialized training platform has been developed by the staff at the Calliope Military Academy in conjunction with the manufacturer of the current Raider, called the Red Hawk, the prototype training LAM allows pilots to learn to operate the type without expending expensive front-line mechs.

The new mech and conventional regiments are fully operational as well and are already at their designated duty stations.

A garrison brigade nominally based in the Griffon system, which had been earmarked for future deployment to Edelsteine, has been dispatched to the NRR. Upon arrival they are greeted with relief by the Rasalhaguian military units which had been forced to stand on the sidelines of the growing crisis as the Prime Minister lacked the lawful authority to authorize their deployment. The Opposition is howling in protest, calling your forces a harbinger of Griffon colonial ambition and that you were only here to ‘murder, rape, and pillage us!’. For some strange reason their mobs of howling urbanites are unwilling to do more than chant loudly at power armored infantry and armored fighting vehicles. Funny that. They were incredibly brave at attacking unarmored and lightly armed police, after all.

It takes several days, but eventually a sort of simmering calm settles over the capital, your forces report that incidences of violence are dropping rapidly even without the soldiers having to actually make use of their weapons. Who could have figured that even the most entitled jackass of a rioter wasn’t quite willing to risk their life when faced with a line of troops in power armor armed with the gauss equivalent of Ma Deuce… and pointedly not pointing them directly at the rioters. Oh, and the SRM on the shoulder also made a statement.

As promised, the current Prime Minister and the governing coalition waits until it is confirmed that the situation is under control before resigning en masse, forcing the dissolution of the government despite the bellows of protest coming from the Opposition. Give them their due, they have balls, as they try and claim that since they didn’t resign that meant that they were now in control and issuing orders for your forces to depart, all former members of the ruling coalition to be arrested, and all elections cancelled ‘for the duration of the emergency’. Nobody is listening to them, and eventually they are forced to leave the government buildings when power and water are shut off to them.

You are rather proud of your commander on site, as he rather blandly informs the sullen Opposition leadership that they are welcome to participate in the upcoming elections and not having them rounded up and arrested.

The situation appears to be under control, at least for now. There is an opportunity here, though. With your forces on the ground, you might be able to nudge things in a more… favorable… direction for Griffon in the upcoming election, especially considering that Gotland is finally no longer a complete economic basket case.
[]Realpolitik baby, Griffon Will Grow Larger
  • Potentially cause the permanent collapse of the NRR
    • If it collapses
      • Incorporate New Rasalhague and Gotland into the Griffon Empire
    • If it does NOT collapse
      • NRR becomes more suspicious of the Griffon Empire

  • +1 Colonial rating
  • +5 Politics
  • Will cost $100,000,000.00
  • Permits certain events

  • Ends NRR Political Instability Event
  • +1 Trade Route

There is a problem with the construction of the new Oasis II station in Nowy Wroclaw, several critical systems fail their certification testing after installation. It appears that you just got some lemons from a production run that for whatever reason passed QA testing at the factory but failed when installed. Both the factory and the installation teams are closely evaluating the situation while new equipment is constructed and shipped to the construction site. The station should be in service no later than Q3 of next year.

The new ASF construction complex on New Phoenix is completed on schedule, accompanied by a large surge of internal migration to the new colony to staff the factory complex. Additional ASF factories are also completed, boosting your production capacity nicely.

New mech factories are also online, with corresponding positive economic effects in the systems in question. There is some concern that the level of production possible now might overwhelm the mech training pipeline, so that will be a concern for the future.

New commercial stations have been built in the New Phoenix system, taking advantage of the location to spread your commercial ‘web’ a bit. A new pair of White Towers have also been built in the New Eden system.

Speaking of New Eden, the refugees from there have arrived on Sukaishi, with local developers managing to build sufficient high quality housing for them on a quiet area on the planet out of respect for their religious beliefs in simplicity and low tech.

The new shipyard in Nowa Warszawa has been completed. In the process a typo in the procurement authorization, combined with a fundraising effort made to cover for the typo and keep the books balanced properly, results in an additional new shipyard module being built, over and above those authorized, boosting your capacity enough to add a new jumpship yard to the Nowy Wroclaw yard.

Your Capital Yards have also been expanded, allowing for a total of 14 new warships to be built next year.

The new Refit and Repair yard has been built in the New Phoenix system, giving you additional repair capacity in that part of space which should prove valuable for the invasion of Okusawa.

The Chamber of Delegates is being just difficult enough that Jake has informed you that he doesn’t expect much to come of the schmoozing and glad handing this year, but has high hopes for after next year's elections.

Attempts to upgrade your strategic materials production capacity runs into a bit of a snag, as the sheer volume of orders for various components overwhelms the capacity of the suppliers to fulfil all of the orders. As a result, expansion of the Double Heat Sink, Endosteel, and Ferro-Aluminium lines are delayed until at least Q1 of next year, with full completion of those projects not expected until Q3 at the earliest. The Ferro Fibrous and Ferro Carbide expansions occur on schedule, however, although the Ferro Carbide lines weren’t finished until the last minute.

On the R&D front, work on the new labs on Nowa Warszawa and in the TTP is completed, giving you additional R&D capacity for your researchers. Also, new improvements in education are rolled out, upgrading the virtual classroom environments with new tools and methodologies that are already yielding improvements in STEM education in particular, although the humanities is not far behind in seeing the new benefits. SARAH is enjoying herself immensely, as she considers some of the code used in the improvements to make them her ‘daughters’.

Unfortunately the good news for R&D ends there. Work on Mobile HPGs hit a particularly annoying snag when some bright spark thought it would be a genius idea to conduct the qualification tests on the continent of Capricorn. Just in time for the Deathapotamasaurus migration, which trampled over the test site destroying all of the equipment. Since nobody has ever been able to reliable predict the precise migration paths of the terrifyingly huge, and stupid, and insanely aggressive, herbivores, there’s no real fault to be had, but it is a very disappointing set back in the project.

Likewise work on the pilot exosuit has run into snags, as the initial versions turned out to be… overengineered in certain ways, causing female pilots in particular to express a desire to hold a tarring and feathering party for the design team when they made it so only particularly slender men, or women with neither boobs nor hips, could wear the new suits. They are back on the drawing board, with the designers being firmly admonished about their complete lack of practicality in that regard.
